Washington D.C. Public Charter School Brings 6 Foreign Languages to Campus
E.L. Haynes Public Charter School Issues Interpreters Unlimited with 1-Year Contract for Academic Translation and Interpreting services for parents, faculty, and students
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 1, 2016—Interpreters Unlimited announced today it was awarded a one-year contract to become the single vendor for E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Washington, D.C., providing interpretation and translation services to its 1,200 students and 220 staff members. The contract is in effect from August 1 through July 31, 2017 to maintain and improve communication in six foreign languages: Spanish, Amharic, Chinese, French, Korean and American Sign Language (ASL).
Among provisions in the contract is a requirement for Spanish interpreters with expert knowledge in special education terminology. It’s also of note that E.L. Haynes’ primary focus is Spanish services since 17.4% of people in Washington DC speak a language other than English at home and of that percentage; Spanish represents 12% of children five-17 and 8% of adults over the age of 18.
“Parents want to be involved in their child’s education. When a language barrier is present, the child’s performance may, in some cases fall due not being able to speak to their parents at home, to lack of confidence or another issue,” explains Shamus Sayed, VP Interpreters Unlimited. “Being able to provide a service that helps the education of today’s youth is very satisfying. I am excited to be a part of that and look forward to embark on a new relationship with E.L. Haynes.”
In addition to Spanish, Amharic, Chinese, French, Korean and ASL services are outlined by the school for specific situations. Situations that require an interpreter include parent teacher conferences, campus events, meetings, special education activities, etc. Written translation of report cards, class schedules, letters, after school activities and campus information will compliment spoken services by communicating with families at home.
E.L. Haynes Public Charter School was founded in 2004 with a mission to ensure every “student of every race, socioeconomic status and home language will reach high levels of academic achievement and be prepared to succeed at the college of his or her choice.” Today, it is an award-winning K-12 school with three locations in the Washington, D.C. area.
