SAN DIEGO, April 14, 2023 — April is a big month for language and language appreciation. It hosts several language days recognized by the United Nations to encourage language learning and cultural appreciation. Among these days, April 20th is designated as Chinese Language Day, and April 23rd which is celebrated as English and Spanish Language Days. At Interpreters Unlimited (IU), we believe in celebrating and promoting language diversity, and these language days provide us with the perfect opportunity to do just that.
Did you know that according to the Census Bureau, around 3 million residents in the US speak Chinese at home? Moreover, Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world, and the number one language spoken in the US after English. In fact, around 42.5 million people in the US speak Spanish as their first language, which is approximately 13.4% of the population. After Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese are the most common Non-English languages spoken in the US, with over 3.4 million speakers across the country.
April is also Arab-American Heritage month, which recognizes and honors the Middle Eastern and North African languages and cultures of nearly 3.7 million Americans. Arabic is among the most spoken languages in the country, with approximately 1,000,000 speakers residing in the US.
According to a recent census survey, about 22% (approx. 70 million) people in the US reported speaking a language other than English at home.
With these numbers it’s no surprise that, aside from American Sign language, Spanish, the Chinese and Arabic languages are our most needed and requested throughout the US. At IU we are committed to breaking down language barriers and ensuring effective communication for everyone. We have a team of experienced contracted linguists who are experts in these languages and their cultural nuances, ensuring accurate and culturally appropriate communication.
Whether you’re a business looking to expand into new markets or reach your current Non-English Speaking customers, or an individual needing to communicate with a business or family in your/their native language, we are here to help. The next time you have a need for any of these languages, or any of the other 200 languages that we cover, whether it’s spoken interpretation (on-site, via video or over the phone) or document translation, you know where to go…interpreters.com!
