SAN DIEGO, CALIF., September 10, 2019 – Jack Ma has had a long and impressive road to success. The founder and chairman of Alibaba, one of the biggest and most successful e-commerce and retail companies on the internet, started from humble beginnings. As an English teacher in China just barely getting by, he was bit by the entrepreneurial bug and decided that he wanted to start his own business. Ma decided that the best business venture for him, being an English teacher in China, was a translation company. His plan was to target businesses who wanted to gain overseas customers, and off he went.
He faced difficult times as the translation company was not meeting his expectations. To help make ends meet as he tried to achieve success in language services, he started to dabble in the resale business, buying and reselling products. Though the translation company didn’t succeed as he had hoped, the business knowledge and experience he gained was extremely valuable. This combined with his resale work on the side eventually paid off. It was the road that led to the next road on his journey to create Alibaba.
Word eventually got around that Ma was an expert English speaker who had started a translation business. He was hired by his local government to interpret in a business dispute with an American construction company. This opportunity required Ma to travel to the US for one month to handle the interpretation, and this is where he was introduced to the internet. He immediately noticed that China had no presence at all on the internet and decided to do something about it.
With the help of the son of a teaching colleague, who he stayed with in the US, Ma created his first website to help connect businesses in China with other businesses around the world. This venture led to the next, and through hard work, perseverance, drive and determination, one door would close and another would open until he created Alibaba a few years later.
Today, as Alibaba is a tremendous success with a market value over $400 billion and no signs of slowing, Ma has decided to retire from the company. He plans too get back into education, this time focusing on improving education through philanthropy. He also plans to spend more time with his family. After all is said and done, you could say that without his translation company, Alibaba might not exist.
